As a certified Leadership Maturity Coach (LMC) from VeDA and a long-time admirer of Dr Susanne Cook-Greuter profound work on ego development and meaning-making, I believe understanding both the hardware and software of human beings is essential for mentoring, coaching and strategising with leaders. True transformation requires not just horizontal growth in skills, knowledge and behaviour but also vertical growth: the evolution of how we make meaning and understand ourselves in relation to the world.

A recent study from the University of Cambridge reveals that the human brain undergoes five distinct stages of structural development throughout life. By scanning nearly 4,000 individuals from birth to old age, neuroscientists identified four neural turning points – moments when the brain’s wiring fundamentally reorganises.

This neural evolution appears to align with Cook-Greuter’s nine ego-development stages: the unfolding of human consciousness from impulsive survival to unitive awareness.

Susanne found this observation interesting and added:

“On further reflection, I realise that old age – say 80+ – is not included in our theories about adult development. As physical and sensory capacities, memory and energy generally diminish, reflection and cognitive acuity may or may not also decline.”
